3. Shark Encounter (Shark Dive Tour)

The Shark Encounter Tour is an unforgettable experience!

You dive into the clear Pacific waters in a special cage and get up close with Galapagos and Sandbar sharks.

Just bring towels and reef-safe sunscreen – the tour provider will supply water, masks, and snorkels. You may bring your own gear if desired.

Note: Incidents of sharks biting people in Hawaiian waters are very rare. Read more on state of Hawai’i site.

🦈 What kind of sharks do you see? Besides the beautiful marine life, Galapagos sharks and Sandbar sharks are most common sharks in Hawaii.

Local’s Tip: If you’re prone to motion sickness, morning tours are best for calmer ocean conditions.

6. Relax On The Best Oahu Beaches

Spend a day at Lanikai Beach, also known as Kaʻōhao Beach, one of the world’s best beaches.

I adore this beach for its powdery sand and crystal-clear, turquoise, warm, and calm waters. You can even spot sea turtles here!

Plus, just a mile up the road is Kailua Beach Park, another stunning spot worth exploring.

💡 What you need to know before going to Lanikai Beach? Lanikai Beach offers minimal amenities, with limited parking, no restrooms, and no lifeguards available.

Additionally, there is no wheelchair access, and visitors must navigate a few steps to reach the beach. 

💡 Best time to visit Lanikai Beach? The best time to visit Lanikai Beach is during the warmer months, which typically last from August 2 to November 5.

During this period, the water temperature averages above 79°F, with September being the warmest month in Kailua, boasting an average temperature of 80°F.

Rent a kayak and explore the vibrant reefs teeming with marine life as you paddle towards the Mokulua Islands.

🤔 How big is Oahu Hawaii? 

Oahu, the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands, covers approximately 597 square miles (1,545 square kilometers). Explore Oahu with the popular Oahu circle drive, which will take you about 4-6 hours starting from Waikiki, Honolulu to the North Shore and back. Estimate about 8 hours to allow yourself plenty of time to stop at different landscapes.

For a more relaxed vibe than Waikiki, Ala Moana Beach Park is the place to go.

Here, you’ll find locals enjoying picnics with their families, Hawaiian paddling, and practicing yoga.

It’s the perfect spot for unwinding and taking in the peaceful atmosphere.

Don’t forget to explore nearby attractions like Ala Wai Harbor and the Ala Moana Center.

Makapu’u Beach Park (Southeast Coast)

Makapu’u Beach Park is a gem along the southeast coast of Oahu, offering stunning scenery and great for surfing.

Start your day with a hike at the nearby Makapu’u Trail for stunning views and watch whales from December to May. 

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve (Southeast of Oahu)

At the southeast tip lies one of Oahu’s most beautiful and renowned snorkeling spots: Hanauma Bay.

This ancient volcanic crater shields the bay, creating ideal conditions for coral reefs, fish, and turtles.

Tip: Because of this uniqueness, Hanauma Bay is a protected area and strict entrance regulations apply.

A paid reservation is required, even if you’re not planning to swim.

🤔 Is Hanauma Bay Worth It? Absolutely, Hanauma Bay is beautiful. If you manage to secure a reservation, it’s definitely worth experiencing.

To avoid the busiest times, aim to arrive either before 9 a.m. or after 12:30 p.m. However, obtaining tickets can be competitive, as they go on sale two days in advance and can sell out within minutes or even seconds.

🏝️Waikiki Beach (South shore of Oahu)

Waikiki Beach is the main beach on the island, stretching for 2 miles with white sand.

You’ll find plenty of restaurants, bars, and the best resorts on Oahu here. It can get crowded, but everyone comes to hang out, socialize, and enjoy activities like relaxing in ocean hammocks.

Waimanalo Bay Beach Park (Eastern Windward Side of Oahu)

If you want to visit a stunning beach with soft, white sand and beautiful blue water, check out Waimanalo Beach.

You’ll barely find people on this beach. 

Plus, the beach faces east, so it gets shady in the afternoon and has cool breezes.

Although there might be some risks, like dogs off-leash and homeless camps at the south end, you can park in the north lot away from them.

• 📍 Nu’uanu Pali Lookout – amazing spot in Oahu. This lokout offers stunning panoramic views of Kailua and Kaneohe Bay, all set amongst beautiful cliffs. There’s also a large public parking lot available for $7. It’s a perfect place to soak in the scenery.

7. Take a Surfing Lesson In Waikiki

Aside from simply enjoying the beautiful beaches, surfing is one of the best Oahu things to do.

Now, Banzai Pipeline isn’t a wave for beginner surfers, but there are other places to go.

Book a private or group surfing lesson with a professional.

Your 1.5 hour lesson will include a surfboard rental, leash, and rashguard, and their team will take photos of you during the lesson. I highly recommend purchasing these photos!

With Stoke Drift Surf School, you’ll be up and surfing in the ocean in no time. Chase and Cody, the instructors, are fantastic – they’re patient and encouraging.

When booking, you have the option of a couple lesson (2 people), or you can adjust the number of attendees for a private lesson.

Or try Group surfing lesson.

For a group of 3-4 people I recommend this 2-hour group surfing lesson (Waikiki or North Shore).

All Equipment is provided, including surfboard, rash guard, reef shoes, and safe storage lockers to store your belongings. Check them out!

8. Visit the Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden

To see more of the native Hawaiian plants, head to Hoomaluhia Boatnical garden located in 45–680 Luluku Road, Kāne’ohe, Oahu, Hawaii.

The garden includes a lake (32 acres) and walking trails, as well as a day use area, campgrounds, bathrooms and a visitor center with lecture room, exhibition hall, workshop, and botanical library.

Exploring the gardens is a fantastic way to spend half a day enjoying nature, and it won’t cost you a dime!

However, remember to bring your own lunch and drinks, as there are no restaurants or shops on-site. 

🚶 Oahu’s Hiking Tips: Trails near the visitor center are paved and easily accessible. Closer to the lake the trail is gravel and may have a muddy section depending on previous rains (not so much wheelchair or stroller friendly).

9. Visit the Byodo-In Japanese Temple

The Byodo-In Temple is in a calm place called the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park on Oahu’s Windward Coast.

It looks just like an old Japanese temple but was built in 1968.

You can see beautiful views there, and it’s a peaceful spot for people who want to relax. Kids can have fun feeding the fish nearby.

If you visit, spend around 30 minutes to an hour exploring.

⛰️ Hike Diamond Head

Getting there: Google Maps link to Diamond Head Entrance

Diamond Head (Le’ahi is the correct name) hike is a popular trail in Hawaii, near Waikiki Beach. It leads up a volcanic crater called Diamond Head.

The hike offers stunning views of the coastline and Honolulu.

It’s about 1.6 kilometers long and takes around 1 to 2 hours to complete.

Many people enjoy the hike for its beautiful scenery and the feeling of accomplishment at the top.

Oahu’s Parking Tips: Remember to buy your tickets online ahead of time ($5 entrance fee, $10 for parking). If you’re driving, make sure to get the right tickets with parking included. Otherwise, you might have to park outside, and spots are limited.

⛰️ Manoa Falls Trail

About a 20-minute drive from downtown Honolulu, you’ll find the stunning Manoa Falls Trail, open year-round.

The waterfall is most impressive during the rainy season!

⛰️ Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail

Getting there: Google Maps link to Wiliwilinui Trail

The trail can be muddy, and towards the end, there will be ropes to help you up. Just make sure to wear proper shoes.

Once you arrive at the top, you’ll see clouds on one side and stunning views of Oahu on the other side.

🥾 What types of shoes are best for hiking?

When hiking in Oahu, wear sturdy shoes like hiking boots or breathable hiking shoes for the best support and protection. Avoid sandals or open-toed shoes.

11.  Enjoy the Beauty of Waterfalls

Looking for the best waterfalls on Oahu, Hawaii?

Discover the top waterfalls in Oahu, Hawaii, perfect for swimming and cliff jumping!

While there are hundreds of waterfalls on the island, many are tucked away in forests or hard to reach.

But don’t worry, there are still plenty of beautiful falls for tourists and hikers to explore!

Here’s a list of best Oahu waterfalls to visit:

💦 Waimano Pools (Falls)

Hike to Waimano Pools for slippery fun and two waterfalls, one great for jumping!

Start on Komo Mai Dr. in Pacific Palisades, not Waimano Ridge entrance.

Follow Mañana trail, then a distinct downhill path with a sign.

Best time to visit: Sunrise-Sunset

Parking: Park on Komo Mai Dr. by trailhead at the end of the road.

Stay on track for about a mile until you reach Waimano Pools—then dive in!

💦 Lulumahu Falls Trail

Follow the muddy path to the reservoir, then continue to stairs surrounded by chain link fence, and through the forest to the waterfall, but be careful to avoid getting lost by following the most obvious path.

Best time to visit: Sunrise-Sunset

Parking: Park near entrance on Nuuanu Pali Dr.

Expect a popular muddy hike in Nuuanu Valley leading to the 100ft Lulumahu waterfall, starting at a car pullout off Pali Hwy.

💦 Hiking the ʻAihualama Falls Trail at Lyon Arboretum on Oʻahu

Lyon Arboretum, located in Mānoa Valley, is a botanical garden with over seven miles of trails, showcasing over 6,000 tropical plants on nearly 200 acres.

Best time to visit: Sunrise -5:30 p.m.

Parking: The parking for ʻAihualama Falls Trail is different from Mānoa Falls, but with a Lyon Arboretum reservation, you get free parking.

Just tell the Mānoa Falls parking attendant you’re going to Lyon Arboretum, and they’ll let you in for free.

Local’s Tip: For the shortest route to ʻAihualama Falls, stick to the main trail, but exploring gardens will make your hike longer. Remember, you need to book a free reservation before visiting Lyon Arboretum.

12. China Walls

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience in Oahu, I highly recommend visiting China Walls.

Nestled along the coastline in the Portlock area of Hawaii Kai, this spot offers breathtaking views of the ocean against towering cliffs.

It’s a favorite among locals and tourists alike, perfect for watching surfers ride the waves or simply soaking in the beauty of nature.

Tip: And for the adventurous souls, there’s the exhilarating option of cliff jumping, although remember to proceed with caution.

Ala Moana Beach Park

For a stunning sunset, go to Ala Moana Beach Park.

Walk to the end of the island, sit on one of the benches, and watch as the sun goes down below the horizon.

Kakaako Waterfront Park

Kaka’ako Waterfront Park is loved by tourists and locals for its swaying palm trees, grassy hills, and stunning sunsets.

Spanning 35 acres and only a 10-minute drive from your Honolulu accommodation, it’s perfect for a leisurely stroll along paved pathways by the turquoise waters.

Tantalus Drive 

Watching a sunset at Tantalus Round Top Drive is perfect for taking stunning photos.

The sky fills with beautiful colors like orange, pink, and red, making it a breathtaking backdrop for your pictures.

Kualoa Beach Park

Kualoa Beach Park on Oahu’s windward coast is one of the best places to catch stunning sunsets on Oahu.

It has many great spots to chill with family and enjoy the view of nature.

14. Visit Spitting Cave of Portlock At Sunset

Nestled between two beautiful properties, this place has caves you can explore, but reaching them means navigating a steep and sometimes slippery path.

There aren’t many safety rails, just a chain link fence and a dangling chain, so wear sturdy shoes and bring a walking stick.

Tip: Once you’re there, you’ll enjoy watching the waves crash against the rocky shore and might even spot some sea turtles.

What does luau mean? The word luau means “young taro tops” .

A luau is a festive Hawaiian feast featuring lively music and vibrant cultural performances from Hawaii and greater Polynesia.

The Polynesian Cultural Center offers one of the best and most authentic Hawaiian luaus on the island.

And you’ll see so much more during your visit.

Local’s Tip: Plan for the whole day. There is no shop in the Polynesian center, mainly just food trucks (and these are pricey).

So take some beverages (only non-alcoholic I allowed), snacks and fruit for the day to enjoy before heading out to the buffet dinner between 4 p.m.- 7 p.m.

Oahu’s spectacular sunrises fill beaches with people every morning.

Here’s an local’s tip: for a quieter experience, get up early, pack some sandwiches, coffee and watch the sunrise; it’s the best way to start your day in Hawaii.

Where is the best place to watch the sunrise in Oahu?

🌟 Our Top Pick: Kailua or Lanikai Beach

Kailua and Lanikai beaches are perfect for watching the sunrise because the sun rises over the ocean, creating amazing colors.

These beaches, ranked among the most beautiful in the world, get crowded later in the day, but in the morning, you can enjoy the peaceful beauty with just a few locals around.

Here’s where you’ll find beautiful beachside homes, clear water, and the famous “Mokes” islands.

Insider’s Tip: Start your day with an easy hike and watch the sunrise the Lanikai Pillbox Trail for amazing views of the ocean and scenery.

It has a beachy vibe, patio seating, and a menu that captures the island spirit. Tucked into a side street, it’s the perfect spot for breakfast.

Try their Lilikoi Pancakes 🥞 or Team Loco Moco 🐮.

Koko Head Crater

If you’re up for a challenge, hike Koko Head in the dark and watch the sunrise from the top for amazing views, including Hanauma Bay.

Climbing the steep Koko Crater trail is a big challenge, but reaching the top of the crater rewards you with sweeping views of Oahu’s eastern side after tackling 1,050 steps.

For this 1.8-mile hiking trail, I recommend bringing a flashlight and lots of water; it gets crowded early because the sunrise is SO spectacular.

Is the Koko Crater Trail free? Yes, it’s free, and many locals do this hike as part of their routine daily workout.

☕ Or enjoy lunch in one of my favorite food spots nearby – Moena Cafe. Just be prepared for a short wait, as there will likely be a line to get a table.

Watch a Sunrise at Chinamans Hat

Get up early and head to the east coast of Oahu before the sun rises.

You’ll see the Koolau Mountains behind you and the beautiful silhouette of Chinaman’s Hat in the water as the sun comes up.

Sunrise at Makapu’u Beach or Makapu’u Tide Pools

Makapu’u Beach isn’t a traditional beach, as it has almost no sand and is formed entirely from volcanic rock.

Despite the uneven, rocky surface and rapidly changing tides, it’s full of fascinating rock pools to explore.

Located on one of Oahu’s most easterly points, it’s an ideal spot to watch the sunrise.

The horizon is almost completely clear, except for the Makapu’u Lighthouse on the right, making it a beautiful and unique sunrise experience.

The beach park is great but I’d highly recommend checking out the Makapu’u Tide Pools during sunrise.

The colors reflect off the calm tide pool waters as ocean waves crash onto the jagged shore, creating a light mist.

To reach the correct Makapu’u Tidepools, follow the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trailhead on Google Maps (see below) starting on a large paved path.

For sunrise, park outside the yellow gates ( they open only at 7:00 a.m.).

From the parking lot, head down the paved Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail.

In about 15 minutes, you should see a set of binoculars.

From there, slowly (the road is rocky and steep) find your way down to the pools, there is a well worn trail going down.

Tip: Use a flashlight, as it will be dark if you want to reach before sunrise.

Sunrise in Waikiki

Our “must-have” spot on Oahu is behind Waikiki’s Hilton Hawaiian Village.

What time is golden hour in Waikiki? In Oahu, golden hour usually happens around an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset.

For example, if the sunrise on Oahu is at 5.45 AM, expect Golden Hour to happen until 6.45 AM.

🌅 More sunrise spots: If you have time, drive out to Hawaii Kai, Sandy Beach Park or check out the Pali Notches Trail (great for Sunrise or Sunset).

17. Buy Local Hawaiian Coffee

There are several great coffee roasters on Oahu like:

• ChadLou’s Coffee Roastery in Kailua.
• Koko Crater Coffee Roasters
• Kona Coffee Purveyors
• Honolulu Coffee Experience Center

Start your day with a cup of coffee and some pastries at Kona Coffee Purveyors. There will probably be a line, so try to get there early.

Kona Coffee Purveyors is known for its 100% Kona Coffee, categorized by district, with a cafe in Waikiki and a roastery on Sand Island.

Some people prefer buying coffee the same day it’s roasted, which is also available at Whole Foods.

Local’s Tip: You can get a grinder at Walmart or Long’s Drugs for a good price and buy whole bean Kona Coffee at various places, but it might cost around $40 per pound at least.

The bird’s eye view helicopter tour covers all the top attractions and beautiful views of Oahu.

If you’re a confident swimmer, you might even catch a glimpse of dolphins further out.

3. Swim with turtles at Cockroach Cove

Also known as Kaupo Bay, on Oahu’s South Shore is a fun spot for swimming and snorkeling, near the famous Halona Blowhole.

This includes access to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, the USS Arizona Memorial, and exhibits.
