TRAVELING TO OAHU FOR THE FIRST TIME?

If you’ve never been to Oahu, Hawaii (or anywhere in Hawaii, really), planning a trip might feel like a big task. But fear not!

By the time you finish reading this Oahu travel guide, you’ll be a pro at traveling to Oahu.

And guess what? You’re in luck because I am living in Hawaii, and I’m here to spill all my insider tips for traveling to Oahu.

Oahu, or “O’ahu” as we call it, is seriously one of the best places to stay in Hawaii. It’s super popular for a reason!

Our Favorite Travel Resources Below!

1. How To Get To Oahu, Hawaii

beach near hilton hawaiian waikiki.
Oahu is one of the top visited Hawaii destinations every year. Book your flights early on to get WayAway the best deals.

Getting to Oahu, one of the best island to visit in Hawaii, is usually done by flying into HNL Airport. While you can travel between islands, it’s pricier and takes longer.

Sticking to a week-long trip to Oahu gives you plenty of time to explore without rushing.

🛬 I like to book my tickets with WayAway, they always have the best rates and plenty of choices. You can also sign up to their Plus membership plan and earn cashback from booking!

Tip: for best rates, book your tickets at least 6 months in advance.

If you travel to Hawaii in the off-season (late spring: mid-April to early June and fall: September to mid-December), you can typically expect to find cheaper flights.

Once you’ve arrived on the island of Oahu, you’ll also need to make sure that you have transportation arranged to get to your accommodation.

2. Where To Stay On Oahu

honolulu city and waikiki on oahu island.
Visiting Hawaii for the First Time? Head to Honolulu, where you’ll find Waikiki Beach – a first-time Hawaii must-do. Waikiki is amongst the top rated places to stay on Oahu.

Waikiki: Waikiki has many places to stay, from fancy hotels to budget hostels. It has lots of dining options, protected swimming areas, and is close to attractions like the Diamond Head Hike and shopping.

✅ Diamond Head: is a quieter, more affordable area just a short walk from Waikiki. It offers parks, beaches, and trails, with hotel rates often 30% lower than central Waikiki.

Ala Moana: Ala Moana, at the end of Waikiki, is famous for its huge outdoor shopping mall. It also has a laid-back beach with calm waters, perfect for a relaxed day away from the busy Waikiki.

✅ North Shore: The North Shore is great for everyone, with snorkeling in the summer and big wave surfing in the winter. Families love Waimea Beach, while couples can relax at Turtle Bay Resort.

✅ West Side: The West Side of Oahu has beautiful clear waters for snorkeling and some good surf spots. Families can enjoy the Disney Aulani Resort or Ko’olina Resort, though it’s a bit farther from Waikiki.

3. Getting Around Oahu

scenic drive around Oahu island.
You don’t need a car in Oahu as a tourist, but it is by far the best way to get around the island.

You have a few options getting around Oahu.

These include 1) Renting a car and driving yourself, 2) Taking the bus, trolley or Taking a taxi or private driver. 3) Bicycle or moped rental.

Below, you’ll find a detailed explanation of renting a car in Oahu, how to use the Oahu bus system (The Bus), and private transportation.

If you’re arriving in Oahu and eager to begin exploring right after your flight, renting a car from the airport is a smart move. It saves you time and effort you’d otherwise spend figuring out other ways to get around.

The drive from Honolulu Airport to Waikiki is short, it takes about 20 minutes (normal traffic) to the heart of Waikiki and about 30 minutes during rush hour.

📍 Oahu Map and distance from Honolulu Airport To Waikiki

Car rentals are available from the Honolulu Airport (HNL Airport) and Downtown Honolulu or Waikiki.

👉 For Oahu rental cars, I recommend and personally use Discover Cars. They compare international companies and local Hawaiian companies, so you always get the best rates.

Download an offline 🗺️ Oahu map

As you move around Oahu island, your cell phone might not always have a good signal. That’s why it’s a good idea to download a free offline map from Google Maps or Maps.Me before you go.

📲 Note: For US residents you don’t need a sim card, many big cellphone companies work in Hawaii, and making local calls is often part of your nationwide or domestic calling plan. However for our national travelers, a Hawaii SIM Card also comes in handy for a better signal.

If you want a relaxed start to your vacation and don’t need a car right away, think about ordering a private shuttle pickup.

You can settle in and explore the city before deciding on renting a car, which is handy if you plan to see more of the island later on.

🚕 Is Uber available in Oahu? Uber is usually cheaper than local taxis, but sometimes you might have to wait longer. Uber X and Lyft are more popular in Waikiki and Honolulu, but not as much in other areas of Oahu. So, having a car is a better option.

Colorful Waikiki Trolley Bus.
Waikiki Trolley Red Line – The Honolulu City Arts District route is the best trolley line in Waikiki for exploring the historic side of Waikiki and Honolulu, Hawaii.

To explore Oahu without a car, consider using the Waikiki Trolley for an easy tour of popular spots, with 1, 4, or 7-day passes available.

Download Waikiki Trolley Mini Map here.

Alternatively, hop on ‘The Bus’, the local bus system, ideal for Downtown Honolulu, Waikiki, and nearby areas, like Pearl Harbor or Hanauma Bay.

While buses cover the whole island, expect longer journeys. So for further exploration, opt for Oahu day trip tours or hire a taxi or private transfer, though they can be pricey.

4. Is It Safe To Travel To Oahu Right Now?

Many travelers want to know, Are there any Covid restrictions for Hawaii right now?

The answer is yes, you can visit Oahu in 2024. Hawaii is welcoming visitors to all the islands, and there are no pandemic restrictions.

After the Maui wildfires in August 2023, the island reopened for tourists on November 1, 2023. You can find the latest updates here.

  • Has a hurricane ever hit Oahu? Oahu is generally safe, but it’s been hit by hurricanes before, notably Hurricane Iniki in 1992. While less frequent than in other Hawaiian areas, hurricanes passing nearby can bring strong winds and heavy rain to Oahu.
beautiful beach in oahu.
Oahu First-time visitors should know that Waikiki is a neighborhood in Honolulu, not its own city.

Hawaii is part of the US, but is very different from the rest of the states. These are essential things you need to know when visiting for your Oahu itinerary for first time:

5. Hawaii ‘’Island Time’’ Is A lifestyle

hang loose sign.
The shaka sign – the pinky and thumb salute – is the ultimate symbol of Aloha in Hawaii. Meaning “hang loose” or “right on,” it reminds everyone to avoid worry or rush in Hawaii.

🏝️ On Oahu, life moves at a relaxed pace called “island time.” People here take their time, and soon you will too.

Don’t pack your schedule too tightly. Leave extra time for each activity so you can enjoy relaxing, having another drink, snorkeling again, or just lounging on the beach.

6. Oahu Reservations: Why You Need To Plan Ahead

Beach in front of Hilton Hawaiian hotel in Oahu.
Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel is popular family destination on Oahu.

Oahu is a popular tourist destination, especially during busy times, so it’s smart to plan ahead.

Book your hotel early, schedule activities in advance, and check the weather forecast before you go.

Local’s Tip: My top recommendation for doing the most popular things on Oahu is to book them ahead of time.

Note: There is a chance that you’ll be able to get to these places without a booking, but to avoid disappointment, just do your homework 🙂

  • Oahu Hotels: Popular places like The Royal Hawaiian, The Kahala Hotel & Resort, and Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club fill up quickly, especially during high season in Hawaii.
  • Oahu Activities and Reservations: Popular activities such as snorkeling in Hanauma Bay, kayaking in Kailua, hiking Diamond Head, and visiting the USS Arizona Memorial require advance permits that often sell out quickly.
  • Breakfast spots: Now, you don’t need a reservation for breakfast, but be prepared for lines at popular spots like Goofy and Eggs ‘n Things. So, be patient, enjoy your coffee where you’re staying, and then head out for breakfast.
  • *Oahu Dinner Reservations* For dinner on Oahu, you can usually get into most places without a reservation, except for a few very high-end restaurants. Just be prepared to wait in line, especially during lunch and dinner hours.

 7. Weather is Unpredictable

Rainbow over Honolulu city backdrop.
Oahu, also known as Gathering Place, has a pleasant climate year-round.

Weather in Oahu stays warm year-round, with temperatures ranging from the low to high 80 degrees F.

It’s consistently humid, averaging around 64%.

🌡️ The island’s tropical climate means it’s prone to sudden rain showers and occasional hurricanes, especially from June to November.

Hanauma Bay snorkeling spot.
Get up early and book your Hanauma Bay natural preserve reservation early, about 7am. The booking system for this popular Oahu snorkeling spot opens exactly 2 days in advance.

While hurricanes don’t often hit Oahu, they can still affect the weather unpredictably—our first visit to Hanauma Bay snorkeling was canceled due to rainy weather.

What is the best month to visit Oahu? The best time to visit Oahu is from mid-April to early June or from September to mid-December. During these times, there are fewer crowds, lots of festivals, and cheaper flights and hotel rates.

  • What is the rainy season in Oahu? The dry season aligns with summer (April to October), while the rainy season occurs in winter (November to March). Rainfall is common somewhere on the islands every day of the year, but during the rainy season, there can be enough gray weather to disrupt your tanning plans.
  • What is the driest month in Oahu? The dry season on Oahu is from April to October.
  • Does it get cold on Oahu? In the summer, the average high temperature is around 83°F, with lows of about 69°F. During the winter, temperatures vary slightly, with highs averaging 78°F and lows around 65°F.
  • Do you need a jacket at night in Hawaii? Hawaii’s weather is tropical and mild, with daytime temperatures ranging from 78 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit and nighttime temperatures from 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. You won’t need cold-weather clothing in Hawaii.

8. Hawaii is Expensive

Hawaii sign in the jungle.

Hawaii can be expensive, especially compared to mainland destinations. Accommodation, dining, activities, and transportation costs add up quickly.

However, you can manage expenses by planning ahead, looking for deals, and choosing budget-friendly options.

Avoid summer’s peak season when prices soar for hotel rooms and flights. Instead, aim for the ‘’shoulder season’’: late January, February, May, September, or October for cheaper flights and discounted hotel rooms.

Tip: In April, there’s a period called Golden Week in Japan, which brings many Japanese tourists.

9. Avoid Sneaky Resort Fees in Hawaii

hawaiian hilton hotel.

Many Hawaii hotels have sneaky daily resort fees that can surprise you at checkout, adding a big amount to your bill even if you prepaid.

Parking fees can also be high, ranging from $20 to $60 per night, and resort fees can be $15 to $35 per night. Finding street parking can be tough.

So, before booking a hotel, make sure to check for these extra costs!

Note: if you plan to stay in Waikiki most of your time, don’t rent a car. You can easily get around Waikiki with a moped or BikiBike ($4.50 for 30 minutes).

girl on a moped scooter in waikiki oahu.

Renting a moped is easy and cheaper than renting a car in Hawaii. You don’t have to worry about parking fees and the only thing you need is to have a valid driving license.

Note: Mopeds are also called (motor) scooters in Hawaii.

🛵 When I first visited Oahu, I rented my moped from different places, but I’d only recommend one company: Hawaiian Style Rentals. They are by far the most professional and easy to work with in their niche.

Most rentals close at 5 p.m., which was inconvenient because I was always late. With this rental, even if you are late, you can return your moped after office hours (5 p.m.). Call them to inform that you’re late.

moped on oahu interstate road.
Hawaii has an Interstate system with highways H1, H2, and H3 built to Eisenhower Interstate Standards. The H1 goes east to west, H3 goes through the Ko’olau Mountains, H2 goes through the valley to the North Shore.

When returning your scooter, park it in their lot (after the office closes), add the chain to the tire, and drop the keys in their special box. That’s it!

  • The only downside to renting a moped is that they aren’t fast enough for driving on main roads, especially uphill (this is by their design). However, the good news is that most roads on Oahu have bike lanes where you can ride safely (and slowly).

10. Rent a car in Oahu to explore areas OUTSIDE of Waikiki

scenic drive around Oahu island.

Driving around Oahu is a great way to see lots of places fast. When I first visited Oahu I rented a Jeep to explore. It’s the best way to find cool hidden spots away from the crowds.

I always use Discover Cars for rentals, you can check their rates here.

When you book your Hawaii Rental Car online, I personally use and recommend Discover Cars. They find both local and international businesses to ensure you secure the most favorable deal!

 11. Go To Other Beaches than Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach, Oahu, Hawaii.

Lots of people come to Oahu for the warm water, which ranges from about 72 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 27 Celsius).

My favorite spots are Hanauma Bay for snorkeling and Ko’olina for swimming.

Don’t forget to bring your snorkel gear and keep an eye out for butterflyfish, wrasse, goatfish, tangs, and the state fish, humuhumunukunukuapuaʻa.

You can download a helpful fish ID card to assist you!

Ko’olina is where you’ll find the Disney Aulani Hotel – one of the Best Hotels in Oahu for families.

Waikiki is the most famous beach, but it can get super crowded during the day. However, it’s great for surfing (or at least for beginner surfing lessons)!

There’s a protected seawall area where you can swim, especially near the Hyatt and the Marriott.

If you’re looking for other beaches, check out ones with “beach park” in the name, like Ala Moana Beach Park. These usually have parking and bathrooms.

Tip: Just like when surfing, watch out for coral and sharp rocks.

If you’re snorkeling just once in a while or for short trips, renting gear is easy and cheap.

But if you snorkel a lot or want to explore a bunch, buying gear might save you money.

Think about things like how you’ll carry it, keep it in good shape, and if it fits well, especially if you need goggles.

  • Can you bring regular sunscreen to Hawaii? Yes, you can. But remember, Hawaii doesn’t allow sunscreens with harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate. If you buy sunscreen before you go to Hawaii, make sure it’s labeled reef-safe. Keep it Aloha!

12. See the Fireworks – a Friday Night Tradition in Waikiki Beach

friday fireworks in waikiki beah.
Cool things to do on Oahu in the evenings: Enjoy some Mai Tai’s while watching the fireworks!

The Duke Kahanamoku Beach fireworks show has been a tradition since 1988, lasting 10 minutes.

There are many street performers and fire-dancer shows (same place) for you to enjoy before the fireworks.

💡 TIP

For the best view, head to Waikiki Beach between the Hilton Hawaiian Village and Outrigger Reef, but arrive early and avoid tall buildings.

For a more upscale experience, consider a sunset cruise, which offers stunning views of the fireworks against the Waikiki skyline and Diamond Head backdrop.

13. Don’t Skip the Nightlife in Waikiki

Unlike the other Hawaiian Islands, Oʻahu has one of the liveliest nightlife scenes in the state, especially in places like Waikiki and Downtown Honolulu.

With new bars and gastropubs opening regularly, there’s always something new to check out, like this speakeasy-style lounge Lei Stand in Chinatown.

Try nightclubs like Scarlet, Playbar, Manifest and finish your party at Kelley O’Neil’s which is open until 4 am (Mon-Sun).

Nightlife is a bit different in Waikiki ”party town” and you shouldn’t compare it to what you have on the mainland.

Even if you’ve been before, experiencing Oʻahu at night is a must!

mai tai bar at waikiki beach.
  • Mai Tai Bar at Royal Hawaiian Hotel: Try their Mai Tais and margaritas and enjoy the live entertainment right on the beach.
  • Sky Waikiki Bar: Trendy rooftop bar in the downtown Waikiki. Go for happy hour (4-5 pm) and stay for the sunset.
  • The Hideout at Laylow Hotel: Go for happy hour (5-6 p.m.). Live entertainment is available every night.
  • Dukes in Waikiki: Beachfront seafood restaurant and bar. Try signature drinks like Hawaiian Time, Endless Summer, or a classic Mai Tai and some yummy pupu appetizers.
  • Hideout: Stylish and trendy with delicious cocktails.
  • Tikis Grill and Bar: Is a casual bar with indoor and outdoor seating. Try some delicious food and signature cocktails or classics.
  • Arnold’s Beach Bar: This is a tiny place but with a great vibe, delicious drinks, and reasonable prices. Mai tais are $10 instead of $20 like at the rest of the places.

14. Hawaiian Words – Know Before You Go

word aloha written on sandy beach.

While English is widely spoken on the island there are some Hawaiian words that you might want to know and use.

  1. Aloha: This is the most famous Hawaiian word. It means both ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’, and it’s also about love, compassion, and welcoming.
  2. Mahalo: This means ‘thank you’.
  3. E Komo Mai: You might see this on welcome signs; it means ‘Welcome’.
  4. Makai and Mauka: These are directions you might spot on signs. Makai means ‘toward the ocean’, while mauka means ‘toward the mountains’.
  5. Ono: This means ‘delicious’ or ‘tasty’—totally opposite of what you might have guessed!

🤔 What does olu olu mean? It means pleasant and refreshing in the Hawaii language.

🤔 How do you say yes in Hawaii? Ae (ā’-e) means yes in Hawaiian, pronounced as ‘’eye’

15. Hawaiian Dialect

It’s not a good idea to try speaking Pidgin, the local language in Hawaii. Pidgin mixes Hawaiian with words from other languages, making it special to the islands.

Oahu Local’s Tip: Using Pidgin if you’re not from Hawaii can be disrespectful and hurtful. If you didn’t grow up speaking Pidgin, I kindly advise against trying it.

16. 🌸 Hawaiian Lei Tradition

lei flower stand in oahu airport.

When you arrive or leave, you might receive a lei, a sign of aloha, meaning love, affection, or respect. Always accept it graciously, along with the hug or kiss on the cheek that usually accompanies it.

caption: Closed leis should rest on your shoulders, while open ones are worn around your neck, but pregnant women should only wear open leis to avoid bad luck.

But it’s impolite to refuse a lei or take it off in front of the person who gave it to you. Leis are an old Hawaiian tradition from the first Polynesian settlers and are still loved today.

Does everyone get a lei greeting in Hawaii? No, unfortunately, despite what you’ve seen in the movies, you won’t receive a lei when you arrive at the Honolulu airport; this is a paid service.

You can buy a lei at the airport or surprise your loved one by Booking a lei greeting online before your trip.

17. Travel Respectfully

diamond head from birds eye view.

The Hawaiian Islands are extremely popular for travel, especially Oʻahu, the busiest one. But it’s not just a tourist trap – it has diverse communities and stunning nature.

Respect Hawaiian culture by learning about its traditions and history before your visit.

Support local culture by participating in cultural activities and purchasing from local artisans. Many hotels offer cultural programs that you can join.

🤙 Practice the aloha spirit by treating locals and sacred sites with kindness and reverence. Mahalo!

18. Embrace The Spirit Of Aloha

aloha word explained on wooden board.

The aloha spirit is like the heart and soul of Hawaiian culture. Sure, you might think “aloha” is just a hello, but it’s way more than that.

💗 It’s like a superpower of kindness and community love, so much that it’s even a law!

Hawaiians are all about looking out for each other, building a tight-knit community, and spreading good vibes to everyone. The more you get into it, the more you’ll dig your time here!

19. Homelessness

It can be surprising and sad for first-time visitors to Oahu to see so many people living on the streets in Honolulu.

Sadly, Honolulu has the highest rate of homelessness in Hawaii and the third highest in the whole country.

You’ll often spot makeshift camps in shaded spots or along sidewalks, making otherwise beautiful areas look messy with litter and unpleasant smells.

Since many homeless folks struggle with mental health and addiction issues, it can lead to more unpredictable behavior, violence, and crime in Honolulu.

20. What Area of Oahu is Best To Stay In?

waikiki surfboards.

Oahu can be divided into 4 different regions – Waikiki, Ala Moana, North Shore, West Side.

Waikiki offers many places to stay, from luxury hotels to budget hostels. There are many dining options and safe swimming areas for kids and beginners, making it perfect for family fun.

It’s also close to attractions like Diamond Head Hike, tours, and shopping, but it can get crowded with tourists.

manoa falls trail.
About a 20-minute drive from downtown Honolulu, you’ll find the stunning Manoa Falls Trail, open year-round. The waterfall is most impressive during the rainy season!

While Waikiki is busy, Diamond Head is quieter and cheaper, just a short walk away. It has big parks, calm beaches, walking trails, and outdoor fitness areas.

Hotels in Diamond Head are often 30% cheaper than in Waikiki, making it great for families and couples looking for peace and value.

The North Shore of Oahu has something for everyone. In the summer, you can snorkel at beautiful beaches, and in the winter, you can watch big wave surfing.

Families love Waimea Bay, and couples can relax at Turtle Bay Resort.

The West Side of Oahu is beautiful with clear waters perfect for snorkeling. Families can stay at the Disney Aulani Resort or Ko’olina Resort. It’s a 30 to 40-minute drive from Waikiki and is quieter than other tourist spots.

Ala Moana, at the west end of Waikiki, has the biggest outdoor shopping mall in America, drawing many tourists. It also offers a relaxed beach with calm waters, perfect for families wanting a break from crowded Waikiki. While close to Waikiki, Ala Moana is quieter and less busy.

Here are the best places to eat in Waikiki and Oahu, beloved restaurants, and must-try dishes that you simply can’t miss on your first visit to the island.

Popular restaurants in Oahu can be booked months in advance. If it is a smaller breakfast spot, be ready to wait in line, like I did for malasadas at Leonard’s.
  • A House Without a Key – is really nice for its cocktail hour and live music.
  • Leonard’s bakery – for malasadas.
  • Liliha Bakery – best Oahu bakery, various locations but we loved the original Liliha.
  • Rainbow Drive in (the location near Diamond head) – I enjoy the mixed platter and Mac salad.
  • Tanioka’s Seafood and Ono’s Seafood for poke bowls.
  • Musubi Cafe – for traditional Hawaiian spam musubis.
  • Eggs’ n Things – multiple locations, delicious breakfast.

Shimazu, Waiola, Island Vintage Shave Ice and Ululani’s are all on Kapahulu – right outside of Waikiki.

Or go to Matsumoto Cafe in North Shore (be prepared for lines).

Jenny's shrimp truck in north shore.
Jenny’s is one of the best shrimp trucks on Oahu. Located in North Shore.

Visit the famous 📍 Giovanni’s Shrimp or skip the extremely long lines and try 📍 Jenny’s Shrimp – equally good!

 22. Where to Go During Your First Time in Oahu

Most tourists stick to Honolulu, but I suggest dividing your week between the city and the North Shore for a well-rounded experience.

These two places offer distinct vibes, so exploring both will ensure you get a taste of Oahu’s beauty and history.

23.  Tips for First Time to Oahu for Families

  • Pack plenty of food for your hotel room.
  • Avoid unknown beaches and check conditions first.
  • Keep a small vinegar bottle in your beach bag during the jellyfish season (summer).

Hawaii Packing List

yellow suitcase with beach vacation items like flip-flops, beach hat and sunscreen.
Don’t forget to pack your vacation clothes and essentials for traveling to Hawaii – here’s what to bring to Hawaii!

Wondering what to pack for Hawaii? Here are some key essentials you must have when traveling to Oahu and the other islands of Hawaii.

Besides your normal beach vacation packing list, don’t miss these items when traveling to Oahu.

First, don’t forget your reusable water bottle.

Oahu has a pleasant climate, but some months and areas, like the North Shore, can get really hot. While exploring, it’s easy to overheat or dehydrate, especially when hiking.

I personally use and love Water-To-Go bottles, which filter your drinking water so you don’t get sick in Hawaii.

Note: Kailua is the best place to rent kayak in Oahu. If you go kayaking with Kailua Beach Adventures, you can also rent a waterproof dry bag and locker from them.

🧳 These packing cubes are lightweight and help you stay organized when traveling.

📲 Do you have a bag to store all your cables, cords and mobile phone chargers? If not, I highly recommend getting an electronics organizer travel case – it’s a game changer!

Yes, there are mosquitoes in Hawaii. While not as prevalent as in some other tropical locations, mosquitoes can still be found, especially in humid and forested areas.

🦟 Bring eco friendly bug spray or these anti-mosquito bracelets

Oahu Travel Tips

Here are some important Oahu travel tips and tricks you should know when first time traveling to Oahu.

a girl swimming with turtles in turtle bay, oahu, hawaii.
Laniakea Beach – Popularly Known as Turtle Beach, is a great place to see turtles in Oahu.

Stick to the areas where you see other people swimming and wading. If it’s empty, it might be too rough underneath. And if you spot sea turtles, keep your distance! They’re protected in Hawaii.

Jeep in the sunset.
Renting a car in Oahu is a great way to explore the country! I always use Discover Cars, which compares both international and local Hawaiian companies to find the best rates.

Remember to drive with Aloha. While Oahu’s traffic can get hectic, local drivers understand that honking, not letting someone merge, or tailgating isn’t the aloha way.

Even in traffic, there’s no need to rush. You might even get a “shaka” (the “hang loose” surfing gesture) from locals if you’re courteous on the road. So, be patient and kind behind the wheel!

Be generous with tips, and if you can, choose local shops, and dine at small, local eateries.

Avoid posting on Instagram at places where signs ask you not to.

Some beaches and trails have signs urging visitors to respect local wishes by refraining from sharing on social media. Aloha!
